What happens when we enable our city-making students to enact actions in real-world projects?
From the end of 2017 to mid-2020, a group of adventurous universities partnered up with real communities to deliver a series of practice-based studios (sandbox studios).
This innovative work expanded our teaching beyond traditional practice enabling each studio to have a real-world project for students to contribute to. Working alongside a ‘project champion studio leaders guided the students in creating realistic ideas that, immediately implementable and that aimed to trigger a change in a local community.
Every studio was different. Using a pool of resources created jointly by all the universities that participated in this program, studio leaders designed place and context-specific studios. This transformational learning experience enabled students to push their boundaries and enact change on the ground.
If you would like to find out what our students got up to when given this opportunity, take a look at the sandbox studio booklet and immerse yourself in what is possible when working with our students.
